Koei Tecmo and developer Team NINJA have officially announced that a playable demo for FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE will launch on March 5, 2026. This early look at the reimagined horror classic comes just one week before the full game’s release on March 12. In a move that has stunned the horror community, the companies also revealed a historic cross-publisher collaboration with Konami’s Silent Hill f, featuring free costume DLC for both titles.
Considered by many to be the pinnacle of Japanese survival horror, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly follows twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura as they become trapped in the cursed Minakami Village. The remake is a “from-the-ground-up” overhaul using the Katana Engine, replacing the original’s fixed camera angles with a modern, immersive over-the-shoulder perspective.
New to the remake is the “Holding Hands” mechanic, which allows Mio to physically guide her sister through the fog, deepening their bond and affecting specific narrative beats. The update also introduces Broken Spirit Stones, which allow players to delve into “side stories” that expand the lore of the village’s doomed inhabitants.
The series’ signature weapon, the Camera Obscura, has been significantly enhanced with new tactical depth:
Enhanced Combat: Players can now utilize Focus and Zoom functions to better manage distance between themselves and the vengeful spirits.
Special Shots & Filters: New filters like the Paraceptual Filter allow for a “Blinding” shot to facilitate escape, while the Radiant Filter enables a “Purging” shot that deals massive damage at the cost of Mio’s willpower.
Winged Spirits: The stakes have been raised with the introduction of “Crimson Malice” states, where spirits sprout wings, rapidly regenerate health, and attack with increased aggression.
The collaboration with Silent Hill f—the latest entry in Konami’s psychological horror series set in 1960s Japan—is a rare partnership between two genre giants. Players of the Fatal Frame II remake will receive free costumes inspired by Silent Hill f (likely for Mio and Mayu), while Silent Hill f will receive its own set of Fatal Frame-themed cosmetics. This crossover highlights the shared cultural DNA of both franchises, which prioritize atmospheric dread over traditional action.
The FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE demo on March 5 will allow players to carry over their save progress to the full version. The game officially haunts the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC (Steam) on March 12, 2026. Digital pre-orders are available now, offering a “Crimson Butterfly” cosmetic set as a bonus for early adopters.
