It’s unusual for Square Enix not to announce sales figures for its main series games within the first weeks of release. Previous modern entries, such as Final Fantasy VII Remake, Final Fantasy XVI, and Final Fantasy XV, all had their sales figures revealed within the first week. However, sales figures for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, other than those in Japan, remain undisclosed.
The only indication we have of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s sales comes from Ampere, an analysis firm that tracks PlayStation 5 active users. They suggest that Rebirth has sold over 2 million copies
The latest news comes from Twitter user ZHugeEX, who stated that the game is underperforming and selling half of what its predecessor, Final Fantasy VII Remake, sold in the same time frame. Given that Final Fantasy VII Remake shipped and digitally sold 3.5 million copies in its first three days, it is safe to say that Rebirth has just surpassed the 2 million mark within the first month of its lifespan. ZHugeEX also mentioned that the game is experiencing weaker sales, indicating that there is no improvement in sight.
Final Fantasy XVI, which sparked a lot of debate among fans and was considered a commercial failure, sold 3 million copies within its first week of release. It still outsold Final Fantasy VII Rebirth in its initial sales in the series’ homeland of Japan. This makes you wonder if a more experimental Final Fantasy like XVI is the way to go for the series as the outcry over how “Final Fantasy XVI is not a Final Fantasy,” it didn’t hold up commercially with a more traditional “Final Fantasy” game like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
