It seems golden era of survival horror is back, and we are not talking about Alan Wake 2 and Silent Hill 2. we are talking about Phase Zero, the debut game from SPINA Studio, which is setting its sights on the golden age of the genre, giving the eerie feelings of the original Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Alone in the Dark while bringing the kind of quality-of-life our modern generations can offer.
The team is made up of industry veterans from Techland, CD Projekt Red, and other major studios, trying to bring their expertise together to create something that feels both eerily familiar and terrifyingly new.
A Frozen Wasteland of Flesh and Fear
Set in 1994 in Flint Peak, a desolate post-industrial harbor town, Phase Zero unfolds over a chapter-based, dual-protagonist narrative (that Resident Evil 2 feeling huh?). A mysterious illness is spreading like wildfire, grotesquely transforming its victims.
Players will step into the shoes of Mary, a reporter caught in the chaos, and Guy, an injured engineer who wakes up alone in a hospital, as they navigate the horrors of Flint Peak.
Classic Survival Horror, Reinvented
it seems SPINA Studio isn’t just inspired by the classics; it’s bringing them back to life with a modern approach. at a look through the trailer Phase Zero features pre-rendered backgrounds, fixed camera angles, and an aesthetic ripped straight from the PS1 era. It seems like a survival horror in its purest form, where every camera shift could hide something lurking just out of sight.
But SPINA promises us that this isn’t just nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake. The game blends in modern refinements, ensuring that players can experience the terror and tension of classic survival horror without the frustrations that comes with it (does that mean the characters will not rotate around itself then?).
A New Nightmare Begins
From the grotesque enemy designs to the ominous, snow-covered streets of Flint Peak, Phase Zero seems to be shaping up to be a true love letter to the genre’s past while carving out a terrifying new future. For fans of ’90s survival horror, body horror, and tense, atmospheric storytelling, this is one to keep an eye on.
Just… don’t turn your back on it. You can wishlist it now through Steam.
