In a surprising and massive reveal, SEGA unveiled a trailer featuring the unexpected revival of five of their iconic franchises: Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Shinobi, Golden Axe, and Streets of Rage!
SEGA has experienced immense success with Sonic’s return to both the theatrical and gaming mediums, prompting them to embark on a significant project to revive more of their renowned franchises on this SEGA revival project.
“In recent years, Sonic the Hedgehog has forged new paths for SEGA, bringing the franchise to life and reaching new audiences in ways we had only dreamed of in the past. Building off that success, we are digging into our legacy and reimagining several franchises to bring these games to more audiences around the globe,” says CEO of SEGA of America, Shuji Utsumi. “Today’s announcement is just the start of our initiative. First and foremost, our ambition will be to create great games with memorable characters and worlds. We hope fans of all ages will look towards our future with anticipation as we release these projects in the coming years.”
For the first wave of these projects we have seen:
– Jet Set Radio: A traversal game within the street-life genre, based on Tokyo’s graffiti culture, where you earn points by creating specific graffiti art around the city.
– Crazy Taxi: An uproarious driving adventure where you navigate a wildly busy city, rushing customers to their destinations as quickly as possible.
– Shinobi: An outrageously famous side-scrolling series in which you progress through levels, defeating enemies using katanas, ninjutsu, and acrobatic skills.
– Golden Axe: A hack ‘n’ slash series with close melee combat set in a fantasy world of dragons, swords, and magic.
– Street of Rage: A beat ’em up series with fast-paced fist fighting in a lawless urban environment.
SEGA promises more revivals of older titles, but they’re not yet ready to announce what they have in store. Let’s hope Grandia and Skies of Arcadia are among the next releases!
