In 2021 Sega, the creators of the beloved character Sonic, announced what they called a ‘Super Game’. Gamers were left with minimal info to know what it is, since then and co-chief operating officer, Shuji Utsumi, has recently shared some hints and infromation about it (via VGC).
While it is still not clear what this project may entail, Shujia Utsumi stated that the Super Game proejct will span multiple “triple-A titles that cross over Sega’s comprehensive range of technologies” and “go beyond the traditional framework of games” and he adds “We are also making steady headway in development of the ‘Super Game’ that we are seeking to create in the medium to long term. As the name implies, a ‘Super Game’ involves the concept of a game that stands head and shoulders above normal games.”
Sega president Yukio Sugino also chimed in the subject adding “To achieve this goal and elevate the business to the next level, we are conducting R&D activities to create a ‘Super Game,’ a major title that scales globally, by the fiscal year ending March 2026.”
One other goal that’s also been mentioned before is to create a game that attracts the “entire gaming ecosystem”, from players and streamers to viewers. A previous report from the company mentioned how it wanted this super game to be something so revolutionary, it would attract more users than any other project it’s ever worked on.
Sega is having an incredibly busy year, with Persona 3 Reloaded gearing up for release in February 2024, a newly announced RPG called ‘Metaphor: ReFantazio’ from the same team as Persona, and two different Yakuza games: Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name coming in November 2023, and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth coming in January 2024.
