Mewgenics Hits “Meowllion” Milestone: One Million Copies Sold in Launch Week

In a stunning display of indie powers, Mewgenics has officially surpassed one million copies sold just seven days after its February 10 release. The “tactical cat-breeding simulator” from the minds of ever talented Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel hasn’t just met expectations—it has completely blindsided the industry with its meteoric rise.

Perhaps most impressively, the game achieved this massive milestone while remaining strictly a PC exclusive.

While many modern hits rely on multi-platform launches to bolster numbers, Mewgenics has proven that the PC audience alone is more than enough to fuel a blockbuster and let alone an indie one. Since its debut on Steam, the game has remained at the top of the global charts, generating an estimated $23 million in revenue in its first week alone.

The game also shattered records for the genre, reaching a staggering 115,428 concurrent players over the weekend. This feat effectively unseated Hades 2 for the highest concurrent player count of any roguelike in Steam history.

For fans, this success is a long-overdue catharsis. Mewgenics was famously announced nearly 14 years ago, undergoing various cancellations and redesigns before finally finding its form as a turn-based tactical RPG.

Co-creator Tyler Glaiel expressed his shock on social media, noting that the game reached 500,000 units in just 36 hours. “We both got a bit blindsided by this,” Glaiel admitted, referencing how the first-week sales significantly outpaced the game’s pre-launch wishlists.

The “PC-only” status has left console players feeling the “FOMO,” but there is hope on the horizon. While the developers confirmed that the launch focus was 100% on a polished PC experience, they have recently teased that console ports—with a potential focus on the Nintendo Switch 2—are now the “frontrunner” for the studio’s next steps.

For now, however, the “cat-pocalypse” remains a PC phenomenon. With an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating and a community already deep into the game’s complex breeding and combat mechanics, Mewgenics is officially the first breakout indie hit of 2026.
