It is hard to believe, but exactly four years ago today, Square Enix broke the internet by dropping the official reveal trailer for Kingdom Hearts IV. Teasing us with glimpse of “Lost Master Arc,” the footage gave us our first breathtaking look into the hyper-realistic world of Quadratum that is unique to what the normal aesthic of Kingdom Hearts normally is. It left the community with a million questions and initiated an agonizing wait that fans are still enduring to this day.
Looking back at that initial 2022 reveal, the most striking element remains the drastic visual and tonal shift. Moving away from the heavily stylized, Disney-infused aesthetics of the Dark Seeker Saga, Kingdom Hearts IV showcased a Sora that felt reshaped in a modern, cinematic reality. This transition—fueled by a confirmed move to Unreal Engine 5—promised a massive technical leap that could redefine the franchise’s visual storytelling and narrative depth (and the trailer showed how that would also affect the gameplay itself).
The brief combat sequence against the giant Darkside heartless in the middle of a bustling city also hinted at an evolved battle system. It appeared to carry a more weighty, dynamic flow, potentially refining the high-flying action the series is known for with tighter, more tactical mechanics.
Since that monumental anniversary event, official updates have been notoriously scarce. As seasoned fans of massive JRPG franchises are well aware, extended development cycles are simply par for the course. Between designing intricate, next-gen combat systems and weaving together the infamously complex lore surrounding the Master of Masters and the Foretellers, Square Enix is undoubtedly taking its time to ensure this new era hits the mark.
As we blow out four candles on the Kingdom Hearts IV announcement cake, the community can only hope that the development silence will break soon. Until we get a new trailer, our Keyblades remain seathed.
