Capcom has blindsided the survival horror community by shadow-dropping a massive new expansion for Resident Evil Requiem during the post-Golden Week window. Titled Leon Must Die Forever, this surprise update introduces a brutal roguelike game mode that pushes the limits of the series’ combat systems. Unlike the structured narrative of the main campaign, this DLC tasks players with guiding Leon S. Kennedy through twenty increasingly difficult levels of randomized enemy spawns and weapon drops. Death is permanent, forcing a complete restart of the run, which adds a high-stakes tension that fans haven’t felt since the original Resident Evil 7’s experimental modes.
The core of this new experience is the Enhancer system, a mechanical departure from the base game’s traditional inventory management. As Leon defeats enemies and clears stages, players fill an enhancement gauge that unlocks exclusive abilities tailored specifically for this mode. These include significant buffs to weapon firepower and unique defensive maneuvers that are essential for surviving the late-game gauntlet. Players will find themselves revisiting iconic locations from the Requiem campaign—ranging from the chaotic streets of Raccoon City to the claustrophobic research facilities—but under a strict time limit that encourages aggressive play over cautious exploration.
While this update is free for all players who have completed the main story, Capcom was careful to clarify that Leon Must Die Forever is a separate entity from the dedicated story expansion currently in development. This mini-game serves as a technical showcase for the RE Engine’s procedural capabilities and a way to satisfy the hardcore fanbase while they wait for deeper narrative content. The update also includes version 1.300.000, which provides general stability fixes and performance optimizations across the Switch 2, PS5, Steam and Xbox Series X platforms.
