Nintendo has officially added the legendary Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance to the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics library, exclusively for Switch 2. Originally released in 2005, this title was a landmark for the franchise, transitioning the series into full 3D graphics for the first time and introducing the world to Ike, a young mercenary who would go on to become one of the most iconic protagonists in Nintendo history.
The story follows Ike and the Greil Mercenaries as they are thrust into a continental war across the land of Tellius. The narrative is celebrated for its mature themes, specifically exploring the deep-seated prejudice between the human beorc and the beast-shifting laguz. Players must master a complex tactical system featuring shape-shifting units and spear-wielding wyvern riders, all while navigating the series’ signature permadeath mechanic, where losing a unit in battle means they are gone for good.
While Fire Emblem is a massive global pillar for Nintendo today, it wasn’t always that way. Path of Radiance was released at a time when the series was still finding its footing in the West. Due to the GameCube’s smaller install base, the game became a rare and expensive collector’s item, often fetching hundreds of dollars on the second-hand market. Its inclusion in the Nintendo Classics library finally makes this pivotal chapter accessible to a new generation of fans who first met Ike in Super Smash Bros. or Fire Emblem Heroes.
